You probably watch porn. In fact, I’m sure you do. Hopefully, some of it mine ?

Have you ever paid attention to it: who the actors are, their backgrounds, ethnicity, sexuality, do they look like you? Would you want them to?

I’m a consumer of porn and enjoy sex, talking about sex, encouraging people to explore their sexuality. But I’m also a fan of the industry, people, and the positive things that can come from it. I’m Samantha.

This lets me look at things in a non-sexual context and observe it more objectively. When you do, you get to notice a trend. Most of your preferences are not represented in the mainstream. For someone like me with varying tastes, it becomes difficult to find what I enjoy and you’re stuck looking for niche sites to get what you’re looking for. Simply, mainstream porn has a representation problem that gets in the way of me getting off.

Looking for men of color is problematic. When you find them they are normally pigeon-holed into their ethnic stereotypes. I speak specifically about men as I am gay. However, straight porn falls into these issues as well. Let us break down some of what you find.

Asian Men: Usually bottoms, portrayed as exotic, submissive, petite, thin, completely excludes South Asian men: India, Pakistan etc

Black Men: Usually tops, thuggish, hyper-masculine, extra large penis

Latin Men: Usually tops, portrayed as exotic, oversexed, hyper-masculine, dark skinned

The best way to combat these issues? Support the people that create the content you want to see. In the search for what I want, I was happy to stumble upon some pretty amazing content and people.

Now, that isn’t to say any of these fantasies are inherently bad. Being objectified as an oversexed latin man can be thoroughly enjoyable. That is when people find out I am latin. With latin men mostly shown as dark-skinned, it is difficult to meet people’s sexual/cultural expectations. It requires a certain level of sexual intellect to be able to separate the fantasies from the people and cultures as they are depicted. This is where the problem lies. Porn has a measured impact on how we view and interact with people, positively and negatively. This has been studied and scholarly journals are easy to find. I encourage you to read them.

Every year Pornhub releases global statistics about what porn people look up. Looking at these numbers you see major jumps in categories for ethnic people, women specifically; Even Pornhub falls into a marginalizing trap. If you’re a straight woman looking for Latin men, that category doesn’t exist on the site or most sites for that matter. The same plays out for looking for muscular men, black men, younger men, all within the heterosexual category. You’re left typing in random searches and hoping what you like appears.

Porn companies also use a multitude of marketing jargon to justify the lack of representation. The main excuse being; it doesn’t sell. This puts us in a catch 22. It can’t sell if it is not offered. It also must be offered in varying tastes. Another large issue that is rarely discussed is the continual hiring of racist porn actors. Based on the notion of what sells many studios will continue to use a specific actor for their scenes, even if that actor specifies they will not work with people of a certain race. This further limits opportunities for porn actors of color and forces them into ethnic fetish roles almost exclusively.

I choose to look at the positive impact pornography can have. Currently, we are experiencing a social upheaval amongst minorities that seems unprecedented. Feminism is taking root in sexuality now more than just social rights. The right for women to express their bodies and enjoy pleasure as openly as men can. Minorities are speaking out against social injustice and stereotyping more loudly and cohesively together: Blacks, Asians, Latins, all expressing lack of representation in film and television.

Finding asianschlong was kind of a happy accident. I was looking up scenes from another Asian themed site I like Peter Fever when I stumbled upon this magnificent penis and hot guy. Being as nerdy as I am I had to find out as much information as possible. It turned out Jeremy Long, the main attraction for the site is a UC Berkeley Law Student. I became very attracted to a part of his reasoning behind starting the project: to dispel the myth of Asian men and small penises, showcase their sexuality, and bring representation to the American market. It was similar to the endeavor of Peter Fever which is why I actively like promoting these sites. Both have set themselves up to combat ethnic stereotypes in a sexual context and give a space for up and coming ethnic talent. You get the coupling of Asian men with multiple ethnicities here as well, not exclusively white women, and the stereotypes are used in jest rather than as a fact of being an Asian male. At the moment asianschlong is still a fledgling site with only two male talents to offer, Jeremy Long and Dat Hung Cok, and some rough cuts. However, I believe as it grows they will gain traction and new talent quickly as it feeds a community that is underserved. I hope both sites extend the “Asian” term to include South Asian men to also bring them to the forefront. Hopefully, I can do a Q & A post with Jeremy and Peter Le, of PeterFever, sometime in the future and learn about their plans for their sites, careers, and how they would like to assist new talent.

They just released a new scene featuring an AMBF, Asian Male Black Female, coupling. Check it out right here!

A trend I am excited about in heterosexual porn is the new focus on objectifying men and female pleasure. Generally, the man is a faceless and uninteresting penis that is shown briefly if at all. This is due to the over dominance of straight men directing and producing porn. Over the years female talent has taken the charge to change some of that. Long time performer Nina Hartley has some amazing stuff. The gay community has also dabbled in straight porn geared toward attracting gay men. Previously sites like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, ugh that name, used gay for pay stars or bisexual men with a focus on following the males instead of the women.

Recently, again while looking for my own fun, I ran across some extremely hot guys on a site aptly named Hot Guys Fuck. Here we see all the focus on finding guys, if mostly monochromatic, and watching them and their expressions as they enjoy some amazing sex. What I really love is how they market their modeling section. It gives you a clear gallery of their male talent with photos and the videos they appear in. This may seem unimportant, but it shows they have a clear idea of whom they want to attract and market to. This is all about people wanting to find attractive guys in straight porn to enjoy, not the male gaze…unless it’s a gay male ~_^

It’s such a change from what is normally done and some of the guys put on quite a show. I would love to find more content like this with a wider variety of guys. So far the focus is on young smooth jocks and bodybuilder types. It’s all still good, but wouldn’t it be hot to see some silver foxes having some fun?

One of my hopes for this blog is to highlight diversity in sex in both content and advertising. You will continue to see content like this pertaining to gay, straight, and trans sex. I have a few more interesting sites to share so make sure to keep checking back and follow me on Twitter! If there are sites you think I should look into feel free to comment below with suggestions!
